Looks like June 26 may be the final curtain call for Google Voice. Google today announced that it's finally pulling the plug on Google Chat upon which Google Voice relies on the Asterisk platform.

You can still use them. You'll just have to use them "differently." Maybe closer to the way that Google has always intended.

I'll still use my primary GV DID, which currently forwards to a Callcentric Free DID and from there to a simple ATA. Outbound? Who knows. Lots of possibilities...

In addition to this one, I also follow the OBiTalk forum. One of OBiTalk's claims to fame is producing a rather sophisticated series of ATAs which can talk XMPP (along with SIP). The feeling over there is that this announcement is not the death knell to Google Voice that others have presumed:

https://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=12546.msg80676

The SteveInWA poster has a lot of "ins" with the Google Voice developers and generally knows what he's talking about. OBiSupport is, of course OBi staff and should have some knowledge of the situation, since OBi works with Google Voice to keep up with changes in their software. Bill Simon runs the Simonics Google Voice Gateway, another big user of Google Voice and XMPP.

So, for now I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And, if GV does go away, there are alternatives, and they're not all that expensive.

We're still here! I'd already set up a Vitelity trunk, and I was ready to forward Google Voice calls in case of a disaster. Looks like I'll ride this train a little longer...

It's kinda like ObamaCare. They'd love to kill it, but those pesky users keep getting in the way.
