Proxmox Heaven

In case you weren't aware of it, all of the Acer refurbs with AMD Athlon 4000+ and 4800+ and X2 processors support Proxmox virtual machines because they are XVM-compatible. Really good buys at just over $200.

How many VMs can it handle?

Looks like they have ample horsepower. We usually figure about 512MB of RAM per VM. Up to a dozen, you shouldn't have any problems with the high end processors.
