Many thanks to TM-1000 for his post at 11-8-10 on how to cross-compile sourced programs for arm.
I have started a project to compile asterisk for the 1535's arm processor. The whole idea stared when I thought it would be fun to transform an ip phone into a SIP PBX.
If anybody is interested please leave a comment.

Can't wait! Keep us posted. Use Asterisk 1.8 and get Gtalk working. Then you'd basic have a free standing, free calling phone.

Hi wardmundy,
thanks for the psychological support. For the moment it seems I 'm stuck on
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [asterisk] Error
after googling on this error, everybody suggests to install the ncurses-devel library. In my case ncurses are already installed on my system. I really can't think a reasonable explanation for my system complains. My corss-compiler seems to work fine on a "hello world" and thttps (bin attached)
I 'm sure if I get some assistance from the linux gurus we 'll short it out.:smile5:

thanks again,
MemoryIC.

I am mainly an Asterisk user (no PIAF user), but this thread has all of my attention.
Is it possible to tar the whole filesystem so I can study it without being logged in the 1535?
If it had an ssh server, I would do:
ssh [email protected] "tar --exclude '/dev' --exclude '/proc' -czv /" | tar zxvf -
But there's only telnet service here.

The phone supports FTP logins with the root account. You can use FTP to do a recursive download of the file system.

Filezilla or gftp might let you exclude what you don't want. You could also take a copy of one of the firmware updates and mount it (-o loopback) and explore it that way.

EDIT: Disregard the mount info. I just looked at the firmware update and they're all tar files. Just un-archive them!

Hi RobertpG,
I believe you could do the same with "telnet" instead of ssh. If you worry that your output tar file wouldn't fit into the filesystem (flash), you may try to plug in an external SD flash mini-card (the slot at the right side) and direct your output there. Alternatively, as mentioned above use ftp.

Back to my previous thread, I still can't figure out why the asterisk cross-compile fails.
Code:
configure: error: *** termcap support not found
This error is common when ncurses-devel is missing. In my case this package is already there... Any thoughts or suggestions are wellcome. I still think is cool to run asterisk on the phone :coolgleamA:

Nortel IP 1535 for ~$50 - WHERE?!?

This Nortel Videophone is available NIB on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/H-264-IP-1535-N...ltDomain_0&hash=item35a811bc42#ht_4036wt_1078 for $49 plus $8 shipping...

Has anyone made it work on PIAF? Nortel site still has full tech manuals... looks like it should be possible.

Pretty sweet deal... I'm sure the quality is probably pretty good.

Gerry

Can anyone tell me if there is another place where I can buy the Nortel IP 1535 for ~$50?

The ones on ebay as of February 2011 are all asking for $120 USD (not including shipping) and up.

I'd like to get my hands on these units for testing our PIAF.

Nortel 1535 & Android Video Conference - SUCCESS

We identified an Android H263 client for 2way video conferencing with the Nortel 1535.

We have 2 Nortel 1535's registered as extensions on our Asterisk box. One of them is physically located 1000 miles away.

I played with several VOIP clients on my android phone but most had proprietary video codecs. I found one that has H263 as one of it's codecs. The Client is advertised for developers.

I installed IMSDroid 1.2.355 from doubango.

Here is what we did to video conference between my cell phone and our Nortel 1535.

Example assumes 205=the extension your Android SIP client will register to. Also assumed myasteriskbox=asterisk IP or URL

Under Options/Identity
Display Name: Any name you wish
Public Identity: sip:[email protected]
Private Identity: 205
Password: mypassword
Realm: sip:myasteriskbox.com
Enable 3GPP Early IMS Security

Under Options/Network
Enable WiFi & 4G/3G/2.5G & IPv4

Proxy-CSCF Host:myasteriskbox.com
Proxy-CSCF Port: 5060
Transport: UDP
Proxy-CSCF Discovery: None
Disable SigComp box

Under Options/Codec
Enable your audio codecs
Enable H.263

We did not have to use NATT for a successful video call.

Dial the extension of your Nortel 1535 using the Video call option (If you call using the voice option you will not be able to convert the call to a video call). Have your partner answer the call using the Video button on the Nortel. Video will begin to show on your Android.

The Android does not send video automatically. Click on command then click on send video. Once send video is clicked, click command and click Switch Camera.

The moment you click Send video, the Nortel will begin receiving video. Depending on your cell phone you may not have a front facing video camera. Our Samsung Galaxy S is one without a front facing camera. We click Switch camera, so the cell phone can switched to the back facing camera and begin sending what it see's to the Nortel 1535.

Pro's: Video Conferencing works on your cell phone
Con's: Depending on your bandwigth audio suffers. Even using the lighter audio codecs audio suffered. Also if you do not have a front facing camera the recipient of your call is seeing whats in front of you and not looking at you.

Summary: We find it convenient to be able to provide coverage of live events to our partners. Videoconferencing with my brother on my cell phone while walking through South Beach in Miami is a thrill for him. This is an interesting platform worthy of further exploration.

Cheers,

I just got 10 for $39.50/ea ... awesome.

Believe you me, they are SIP compliant.

How far the mighty have fallen. I worked with Nortel (and still do with Avaya). Less than two years ago, I was part of a large Nortel demo for a big client, and the 1535 was a huge part of the demo.

There is info on voipinfo.org and the net indicating they have em running with SipXecs, which is a SIP-based open-source switch. They are NOT unistim.

Getting video to passthrough asterisk may be a pain -- but if that does not work, I'll use accounts on sip2sip.info and get HD audio + video.

Let's share are info with the PIAF crowd!

Gerry

These phones have always worked with PIAF since it was originally announced in this thread.

We have Video conferencing working smoothly using the configuration information in this thread as well. We purchased ours for $50 have not updated the bios and they worked out of the box. They work as extensions on our PIAF. Several are remote or over 1000 milkes away. My ofc extension works over WiFi after following the instructions in this thread.

Cheers -

Um, as the original poster on this thread, I can assure you you could buy them for <$50... In fact, I bought many at less than $30 (in quantity). The early bird gets the deal! After my announcement here and on DSL reports, sales went through the roof, and the suppliers raised the price.

Anyone know if this phone has multiple LAN ports? Everything from the manuals make it seem like there is only an input port. I only have one LAN connection to each desk so that would be a problem without getting a switch for every desk.

Consider of using the wireless capabilities of the phone (mine does supports wifi). It's very convenient and portable.

Video stopped working

Hello, following this xclnt thread, I got last Dec a few phones for $37. Now, they are all back to $70-130!! :(

Turkish non-wifi phone.
HW Ver: 1.00
S/W Ver: 0.2.93

All worked great...

One of the phones, which was working fine before, has developed a video problem. Meaning, the phone becomes unresponsive when making a video call (it does NOT hang, simply acts "dead" with the line on the display reading

"Calling video to:
1xxxxxxxxxxxx"

Total silence. I checked the camera. Works well. Still pic, video etc. all work well. One thing I found was that setting the Quality of the Image to Low acts like a zoom lens, while the setting High acts like a wide-angle lens.

I am testing in an ofc environment but I do not think the router has anything to do with it. I have opened 23000 - 24000 ports.

Strange! Any ideas? Thanks.

The phones I have wind up with a high-load when doing calls, especially video calls.

Here's an example of an idle phone. The load values are very low, right now:

You can monitor the same conditions if the phones you have support the telnet feature. It's buried in the system settings and documented earlier in this thread. You can run top once you're in and it should show you the same info.

Mine kind of do the same thing you're describing. You just have to wait for the phone to "catch up" before the display updates. Of course, you could just have a bad phone, too. FYI, none of mine are the Turkish models.

Thank you randy. Good to know this stuff. The Turkish model allows telnet.

Actually, I connected it to my home n/w last night, and it worked as expected!

Crazy, I have no idea what setting in my ofc environment prevents the video. There is a GXV3000 here in my ofc that works great with another GXV3000. We have an older Linksys router in ofc., and a newer WRT310Nv2 at home.

This is a Brain-scratcher for me...

I purchased these ages ago, and I am only now really looking at them.

I am trying to connect to my local asterisk server.
I have two problems.
1) It forced me to type in a domain (and according to the posts, it does not make a difference, so I chose "pbx). However I get the following error in the log:
Code:
[2011-03-14 10:54:01] WARNING[24263] chan_sip.c: username mismatch, have <104>, digest has <104@pbx>
2) Wifi does not work. I go to enable the wifi profile and it says success. (I have the small antenna in the top left corner). However when I goto to wifi scanning, it gives me an error saying profile not enabled. But when I go back to the profile to enable it, it says already enabled.

Hardware is 1.0/SW 0.2.50
Thanks
