I have to disagree slightly. It's not "the best of both worlds." It actually is both worlds. People move from Asterisk to a 3CX-based solution and still need Asterisk for trunks or DAHDI hardware, so they build an Asterisk server to go alongside it.

Some of us would then raise the question that if you're going to build an Asterisk server anyway, why bother with 3CX...

The gateway is primarily for those that have legacy analog cards that are only supported on the Asterisk platform. The trunk issue will be addressed separately. Stay tuned.

I would point out that FreeSwitch also fully supports DAHDI hardware (Dahdi is NOT part of Asterisk) . And FreeSwitch is closer to a SIP proxy than Asterisk IMHO.

If the 3CX is limited to one sip trunk and you want multiple trunks this would be away to get around it. although why bother may still aply.
