Many of us use the 1 year free plan from 3cx, and they have recently provided an improved plan that 3cx still does not charge for. So for many of us, 3cx is not costly.

Ward has stated that he is against closed source solutions that FreePBX was starting to push, and as long as it can still be compiled from source, then the community seems to be good with it.

Just to clarify the current 3CX (free) license. You get the Standard License features listed here for one year. At the expiration of the year, you can purchase the standard license OR your free license will automatically convert into a 4-simultaneous-call perpetual license with unlimited trunks for the duration of the installation, including DNS, email, SSL certs, webmeeting, etc. Nothing else to buy ever!

Note: If you fail to renew, your PBX will be downsized to a 4SC licence key. "


if you want to renew the license, it will cost you, but if you downsize it to the 4SC key, it is free and as @wardmundy posted, includes 4-simultaneous-call perpetual license with unlimited trunks for the duration of the installation, including DNS, email, SSL certs, webmeeting, etc. Nothing else to buy ever!

What "for the duration of the installation" means?
Regarding the 4SC perpetual license - I understand that with perpetual license you don't get maintenance which means (?) that the soft clients won't update etc., or am I wrong?

I think you are wrong, because I am still updating my software, but I am not able to call for help (maintenance) unless I pay 3cx to upgrade my key.
