I recorded my voice with a professional mic and created a high quality .mp3 file but once uploaded, it plays back poor sound quality though the original sounds superb. I have also tried saving as .wav (16 pcm 8000) but that results in poor quality even before I upload it to the PBX. I would almost be better off recording it from a phone extension but I need to add background music. Has anyone mastered the right file type and parameters that produce good results once in the system?

Unfortunately, the high-quality MP3 is instantly converted into a WAV 16-bit 8000hz because that is the "native" Asterisk system recording format. IIRC, it won't play anything else unless you have it in a certain "codec" format like ulaw or g729 with the respective file extensions.

8 khz sampling 8 bit
blanchae, are you sure its 8bit because from the 'system recordings' page in PIAF it says....
"Alternatively, upload a recording in any supported asterisk format. Note that if you're using .wav, (eg, recorded with Microsoft Recorder) the file must be PCM Encoded, 16 Bits, at 8000Hz:"

8 bit 8 khz is g.711 ulaw - can't go wrong with that. I've found that the number one problem if you use 16 bit pcm 8khz is the volume. Too loud and it will create horrible audio.
