I'm going for it!

I use PIAF, Freeswitch and SipXecs... so these will work on at least one of em. I'll report PIAF findings after I try.

Better take a gander at VoIP.org site on Nortel phones - might not be worth the effort. They are "Nortel SIP compliant" which means they are running the UNISTIM protocol. But again the 1535 states its RFC 3261 (SIP) compliant. Like you said the only way to know is to try it.

I'm going to purchase 17 of these guys. They are dirt cheap, video and wireless phones plus RFC3261 compliant. I figure that with enough head scratching, I should be able to make them work with PiaF in some form or manner. Naturally, I'll post what I find in a verbose manner as per my custom.

I just got 10 for $39.50/ea ... awesome.

Believe you me, they are SIP compliant.

How far the mighty have fallen. I worked with Nortel (and still do with Avaya). Less than two years ago, I was part of a large Nortel demo for a big client, and the 1535 was a huge part of the demo.

There is info on voipinfo.org and the net indicating they have em running with SipXecs, which is a SIP-based open-source switch. They are NOT unistim.

Getting video to passthrough asterisk may be a pain -- but if that does not work, I'll use accounts on sip2sip.info and get HD audio + video.

Let's share are info with the PIAF crowd!

On another note, in 1999, I was a train the trainer for Nortel/Baynetworks High School curriculum to compete with the Cisco Academy. There didn't seem to be any controls over the spending of money. We'd stay in 5 star hotels - all expenses paid and take limos to supper. My wife and daughter stayed for free when I took a course in Miami.

Besides the lack of controls, if you ever want to see a poorly designed piece of gear take a look inside a Nortel Passport 4450 Frame Relay Frad. Instead of one proper power supply, there's 4 or 5 mickey mouse power supplies stacked on top of each other! Not to mention the 3,000 page manual to figure out how to operate it.

OK. I'm in for 6 of them. Can't wait for someone to make them work. :wink5:

I've uploaded all of the manuals as well as the latest 2.50 firmware if you need them. And here's the Nortel site link.

I'm in as well. Future Endpoint Manager support is on it's way!

The first two configuration examples provide additional details on how to setup either a DHCP or provisioning server. In both examples, a Windows 2003 server is used. For the rest of the examples, you can refer to these two examples for more details on setting up either DHCP or a t*f*t*p server for IP Phone provisioning

Hope there's some left for me. I have to go through the chain of command here and they tend to drag their butts...:frown2:

They have a lot...

I spoke with a rep on the phone. They have quite a few. Mine have been shipped... I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Besides the Camera, what makes these phones special?

Do they support any other other features, such as xml browser, BLF, etc...?

Thanks

Yes, video is an attraction; It has a POP/Email client and web browser, and the speakerphone is decent.

Of greater interest, it has open-source (linux-based?) firmware. (The processor is an Intel PXA 270).

It's been around on ebay for $99 for a while... I think now that now that it's available in quantity in the $30 - $40 price range, it's a suite spot for experimentation. From what I've found on "the Google", those in the know have had success using it as a videophone with sipXecs -- therefore, I have no doubt the great folks of PIAF ecosystem will "make it play".
