Been there, done that. Almost always oversubscribed so performance was pretty terrible.

I have to admit, while Woothosting was terrible at first, I did ultimately implement a nightly rsync backup from my HiFormance VPS to a Woothosting VPS. While in the beginning the performance and reliability was bad, perhaps enough people jumped ship, that my Woothosting VPS has been up now for several months, and with the demise of HiFormance, turned out to be a good investment, as I have a full backup of my HiFormance VPS. Granted, I have not ran any services on Woothosting to stress the performance, but as a backup repository, it turned out to be a good investment.

@wardmundy What do you think the odds of something like this ever happening to Vultr? I got a lot of eggs in that basket. I'm looking at using FusionPBX for failover for all of them, but not setup yet.

If your server is critical, I think the only guarantee is diversification with other providers. There's just no way to know what financial condition a lot of these privately-held companies are in. For Nerd Vittles, we've actually got 3 backup platforms in various areas of the country. Got fooled once in the early PIAF Forum days but never again. I trusted that RAID10 would cover us and that turned out to be stupid. The RAID controller failed, and they lost everything.

CentOS or Debian for new install on KVM, I am going to try Alparacks but with more oomph (6 cores / 4GB / 80GB SSD) so I am wondering which to use -- still going to FreePBX Gui though but I want Watson (IBM TTS/SST) and the option of Polly (AWS) as IGOR sounds terrible. And if I recall CentOS6 can't handle Polly so maybe Debian instead (so used to CentOS but I am a ham and using Raspbian for a hotspot called Pi-Star, so maybe it's time to use Debian as base for PBX too).

Debian 8 is EOL, I think. And Debian 9 has all sorts of issues especially with ODBC. I'd stick with CentOS 6 if my business depended upon it. Alpharacks looks like a winner to me. Full Incredible PBX 13-13 CentOS 6 install took exactly 30 minutes which is about what you'd see on a fast home server. Now we wait and check stability. By the way, they have a 3-day money-back refund policy. You can also make backups in their GUI, but I haven't tested that yet.

Purely from a performance standpoint, openvz typically outperforms kvm. That assumes no oversold situations. But really, if they're oversold both are crap. I've heard a lot of arguments about dedicated vs shared memory but my experience has been that openvz is entirely satisfactory if it's with a good host. I question whether kvm is worth the higher price that most hosts get.

Other than for public-facing web servers, I tend to agree. But ColoCrossing has flooded the market with these cheap rental servers so it's next to impossible to find a reputable OpenVZ provider... but I'm all ears.

It's hit or miss when trying to find a good host. I've had my share of bad providers.

Some years back I found a deal with chicagovps.net at lowendbox to use for my hosting server. Service has been terrific, and I'm locked-in at a good price. However about a year ago they got bought-out by colocrossing. Service is still good but I've noticed that their blowout deals at lowendbox aren't as sweet as they used to be.

As for Linux flavors, I always use CentOS for production servers. RHEL is the industry standard for stable servers. Some web hosts make a good argument that Apache & PHP are pretty old with CentOS, so some hosting providers go looking for Linux distros that provide newer versions. I guess I can't blame them for that.

What about woothosting.com?
Shetu,

I'm using woothosting for my email server (running iRedMail). The price is right, but the downtime is ridiculous (as is the oversubscribed physical server).

I run an hour or two of downtime each month (on average) and when it isn't down, it is often so slow as to be unusable.

I reboot the machine each night at 3AM - it will often still be hung, offline or 'status unknown' a few times a month forcing another reboot (not from cron, but from the cpanel).

Email will get resent; phone calls will just be missed. I'd never use woothosting VPS for a production phone system.

I wouldn't go that far. There's good service at a low price out there. In Disney movie terms, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince.

Just wanted to throw inceptionhosting in this discussion. Knock on wood - several years without a single hiccup after initial Miami DC disaster.

Well I tried this one... https://www.welcomehosting.com. So far its not working out. The software repository is using 4 year old images of centos and no minimal option available. The other problem is there is no option for RDNS, so if you have a small company with a mail server, it is going to be marked as spam.
The good thing is that is was set up immediately on payment and support seems responsive.

So looks like the LET thread was either deleted or hidden. Not fishy at all!

Will report back on this current AlphaRacks KVM offering: https://www.alpharacks.com/myrack/link.php?id=331

This is still less than $2 a month with 1GB RAM, 20GB RAID10 SSD, 2TB bandwidth, 1000Mbps uplink port, and KVM platform (NOT OpenVZ)...

Reviews here. Company has been around 5+ years.

That looks like HiFormance. So that makes me think they were a bit shady from the start.

I've been emailing Ward, and sent him that screenshot of HiFormance shutting down. IonSwitch.com has been around for over 16 months and has purchased all of our own hardware and rackspace (absolutely no leased/rented/borrowed/colocrossing hosts). We keep all of our hypervisors load under processor core count, and document our dedicated CPU time (ie, minimums) if the hosts do get oversubscribed temporarily. All this happens automatically. We have over 1,000 happy customers today -- small and growing.

We are out of Seattle, WA -- which might be a bit to latent for some folks.

I would be happy to help support any folks who want to move to our platform -- I don't have an image available, but you can either upload one yourself, or I can make one available.

We are 100% KVM, and as we don't oversell, we are a bit more expensive than the OpenVZ folks who can sell ram 10 times over and swap it out to SSD.

I have created '2018-PBX` as a 15% off coupon for folks here on machines VPS1 and above.

Our VPS512 offers 512MB of ram 5GB Storage (i've been upgrading this to 10GB for free, just open a support case), and 500GB of data. ($17.50/yr) -- looks like a small number of uses are still available from our black friday deal ($15.00/yr -- 2018-BLACKFRIDAY512).

Our VPS1 offers 1GB of ram, 10GB of Storage (Open a support case, reference PBXINAFLASH, and I'll bump to 20GB), and 1TB of data. (2.98/m, or $29.75/yr).

Annual prepayment offers a stacked 17% discount with the 15% coupon above.

We offer true refunds (even on annual plans, we want you happy) officially for the first few days, and informally we've never declined a refund.
