NO JOY Neorouter latency troubleshooting

Hi,

I've been running PIAF (at RentPBX) and Neorouter for years with success.

Today, I have a weird issue: Poor latency via VPN but not to the public IPs.

1. If I ping the server over the Neorouter VPN (i.e. 10.0.0.x) - I get some fast pings and some that are 200ms+ . This occurs from my workstation to the server and from the server to my workstation.

I figure I just have crappy connectivity, so:

2. I ping the server public address. I expect to see the same pattern as above, but instead I see only good pings.

3. I run MTR on the server to my public address and WinMTR from me to the server: No packet loss and fast on each hop.

I rebooted the server and my workstation. I can't figure how the direct connection seems solid and the VPN running over it isn't.

Any suggestions?

More info on this...

Pinging the server IP (10.0.0.2), I get 30ms pings.

If I start a phone call from my PC using a light codec (i.e. g729), the pings double to 60ms or so.
If I use a fatter codec, I have pings of 100ms.
The more bandwidth I use, the more the latency increases.

Pings to the server public IP are not effected.

CPU usage on server and client is minimal.

RentPBX says they don't shape traffic.

If no one here has an idea I am going to try another VPN...
