Vbulletin lets you specify the minimum word length (Search Index Minimum Word Length), where you can specify 3 letters if you want. However, your database size is going to increase, perhaps significantly.

Vbulletin does allow for 3 letter searches, it just greatly increases the size of the search index so 4 characters is the norm. Another option is to leave it at 4 characters, but you can also allow indexing of specified 3 character words (ie, ram, ups, etc).

If you have a sata CD/DVD drive in your desktop, you can use that as long as you also have a sata to esata cable. That is what I did for my revo install.
