Just got of the phone with Verizon. They offer it for my client's location. $5.75/month per path, so at least I am out of the wood on that.
I have read some of the comments and am still wondering why Ward(in the quoted article) stressed to have a Ma Bell line for business. My guessing is(as long as you have UPS battery for your network;PBX, switches, and phones) and your internet and power go down, you would still be able to make and receive phone calls - is this correct?

Thanks for all the help, its appreciated!!!

forward it to a temp DID until they switch it.

To answer your other ques... VOIP providers and internet providers are not as reliable as Ma Bell. Depending on where you are if you can get a major provider to host your business number and provide VOIP SIP service then that's a good way to go.
In dynamic situations or very small businesses it can be easy to just keep the Ma Bell POTS line and forward it. Some traditional phone companies have call forwarding multipath to handle more then one incoming call at a time but for a very small, low volume operation that might not be needed.

Briankely63,
If I forward to a temp number, does that limit the amount of downtime during the port?

Thanks,

It can depending how they do it. Another option, if this is not a widely advertised number, is to keep the old POTS number but answer the line with a recording that gives the new number (maybe a vanity number that easy to remember or toll free number). This helps give a reason as to why you're changing the number. At some point you could cancel the POTS line (maybe a year).

Again the ability to quickly reroute a popular, advertised main number shouldn't be overlooked. The Verizon's of the world are multi-billon dollar operations with their own networks and redundancies. VOIP is not because the internet has many points of failure.

My issues is, this is a new office and my first PiaF install(first PBX at all). The CEO is a good friend of mine and they are an I.T. client of mine. they needed a number for business cards and such and after reading Wards article, I got Verizon involved. They won't be in the office for another couple of weeks, but at this point I'm just going to leave it is as it is. I now can have multiple forwarding off the main line and the extra $15-20/month is tiny compared to the money I'm saving them from the old analog PBX that they have had in the past locations.

Thanks,
Brian

I absolutely plan on it! I just want to get the customer(my first) up and running. I would NOT be able to do this without this forum and the articles at nerdvittles. I have put a lot of time in on this and think this can really help my business(I.T. consulting), get in the door of new clients.

Thanks again,
Brian

I forgot to mention, Callcentric's techsupport has helped me out tremendously through this process, also. I am not affiliated with them in any way, just a past/present personal customer for phone and fax.
