It was nice while it lasted.

Yes it was, or at least will be for a few more months.

Right now my personal number belongs to GV, but it's only used for forwarding (no asterisk integration). If they preserve that feature during the transition to their Hangouts platform (or whatever GV becomes), I probably won't port it out of the Google-verse.

Does anyone know if this will have any affect on the PIAF server? Does the PIAF server use the XMPP protocol?

If I understand your question correctly, the answers are "yes" and "yes."

If you are using GV as a trunk on a PIAF PBX, it is most likely via use of XMPP. If/when GV "turns off" XMPP at its end, your trunk will stop working.
