I think the smart bet on Android phones would be to come up with a dock with connection points (Ethernet, USB, headset, etc.) , a speakerphone and an old fashioned handset dedicated to a specific tablet such as a Nexus or Galaxy Note.

Actually, there was such a beast that we reviewed: The Mocet Communicator. Trouble was that the dock costs more than most of the Android phones with Android built in. Then you had to add an iPad on top of that. Won't even get into how quirky it was to get any flexibility inside the iOS architecture. So, yes, it's possible. But the price point is going to make it cost-prohibitive IMHO.

I think I had seen that one. Your video sure makes it seem pretty slick though. IOS is tougher to break out of, hence why Android would probably be a better vehicle for implementation. With the dock approach, you still get to take your tablet with you and might be a good fit with something like the VMobile system.

Can I ask what you found quirky about it?

There are some decent docks that just offer a handset and you could use something like Bria as a soft phone on the iOS device.

In reading the literature, it seems you could use the USB port to plug into a computer and use the handset/speakerphone for audio when using PC based apps. I wonder how much of that is true...

Doesn't talk SIP according to one of the posts on DSLR. That would be a major deal-breaker for me.

I pulled down the PDF doc on the phone. It looks like it could go SIP, but is confusing as to the software, this is what I see:

OS Android Kit Kat (Version 4.4.2)
Voice Codec G.722/Speex/iLBC/PCMU/PCMA/GSM
Communication Software UniFi Phone App
Management Features Auto-Provisioning
Protocol SIP/SDP/RTP/RTCP/VLAN/DHCP

And then this.

The IP PBX software Ubiquiti is using comes from the open source provider Free Switch and comes bundled on an all-in-one device that includes not only the IP PBX but also a router, gateway and firewall. The company is also releasing what it calls an SDN controller, to centrally manage VoIP, the firm's video surveillance product (UniFi Video), wireless LAN and the network, all from a single console.

Ubiquiti tends to do this. Release information about a product before it actually goes on sale. And the low end model always shows up first, way before the high end models. And some of the sites that sell their products will list them, but give them a call and they will tell you they expect a shipment in a few weeks according to Ubiquiti. I had this issue when trying to get a higher end EdgeRouter unit.

Here is the first sighting I've found in a store.
