I tried it out again and I was able to get TCP to work with the knock client, but not nmap. It works most of the time with tcp but occasionally the stages get reset. Not sure what the problem is but I don't think I am going to investigate any more at the moment. I tried both the Windows and Linux version of nmap. I also tried using the -Pn flag it recommends without success.
I've not tried the cell phone apps yet, which is where this will be most useful I think. Just desktops at the moment, but I assume they are similar in functionality. I did notice when investigating the knocking client apps that they do not appear to be able to detect IP changes for automatic re-knocking.
I am hoping this will work well in conjunction with Vitelity's vMobile. I've never tried their service before but the concept sounds much better than a sip client app on the phone.
