Tony,

Are things really that good in the FreePBX world that every time I turn around I see you on this board arguing with Ward..

Please return to your respective corners an wait for the next bell !

Hint, The bell is broken so it will be a long wait !

Well considering we get customers wanting support on PBXiaF systems we need to make sure we keep up with the changes and when I see a major change such as moving to a new Linux Stack I want to make sure people are aware of things such as the legal requirement SL has on using their repos.

phoneguy: Just to be clear... "the new Linux Stack" is identical to "the old Linux stack" and "the Upstream Provider Stack" and "the Schmooze Stack" with the exception of "the Name of the Stack." Same goes for the files in the various repos. Most of them are trademarked and/or copyrighted by organizations that have absolutely no relationship with any of the companies claiming brand ownership to a collection of products which they don't actually own. :ack2:

As previously indicated, nobody currently has a registered trademark in the CentOS "brand." We intend to challenge any claim to a CentOS registered trademark if no one else does. The history of the CentOS brand is covered in this Nerd Vittles article explaining why we believe that name has been placed in the public domain. Until that issue is settled, we will provide alternatives.

As for using public repos, if you put unprotected, open source files on the public Internet, those files can be accessed/downloaded/used by anyone on the Internet IMHO*. If you wish to restrict the use of files on the public Internet, there are plenty of ways to do that. Licensing restrictions (covering files you don't own!) buried in other obscure web site locations requiring different access methods and protocols may not be legally binding.*

* This is not legal advice, blah, blah, blah.

I am just speechless! Here we are doing our own little thing and we get this enormous influx of offers of help to show us the errors of our ways I must say I am gratified by the outpouring of support from such high powered experts with such a wide range of skill sets that just make us all feel inadequate....... I suppose we will just have to go our way because we don't know any better and are too dumb too learn from the "experts". Poor Ward feels the worst of any of us as all of the high powered legal education he has is obviously been wasted........... It is a pity that things are just not as well here as they are over in the fpbx world I don't think we realized we were on double secret probation

Ward and Tony, I don't know what the history is that set you two at each others throats but I wish it could be worked out. PIAF is a fine product and so is FreePBX. I can't imagine having PIAF without FreePBX. Unless the PIAF team has cooked up some knock 'em dead GUI of their own, we kinda need the folks at FreePBX to keep the PIAF product viable.

I like the products from both teams and each has pros and cons. Tony and Ward each have their pros and cons. I think a lot of us would really like to see a handshake and more amicable relations going forward. Remember the Greenies and the kind of crap their forum turned into from all the sniping.

I'd like to see both sides put their hackles down and agree to quit agitating each other (and us netizens on the forum.)

From my perspective, there are some novel legal issues. Tony has a view of the universe and so do we. From our standpoint, we're not going to let legal assertions that are detrimental to our legal position stand without a response. We've discussed this in private phone conversations and agreed to disagree, but somehow it always manages to appear again on the PIAF Forum only. We keep asking ourselves why. If anyone has any ideas, please clue us in. Like I said, it's not like we haven't heard this before on the phone. All of this will get worked out sooner or later. In the meantime, I agree with you kenn10, it would be good for everyone to try to get along.

Thanks Ward. Now if you and phoneguy can sit together on that olive branch, I hope the wondrous advances can keep flowing from both camps in an amicable fashion!

Sounds like it's time to move to LiaF, Linux in a Flash, a distro created and maintained by the PiaF Team with no restrictions on use what-so-ever! Time to get building; gentlemen, to you pooters! lol.

What a fiasco this has been, ha? I'm glad that I've gone the Ubuntu route with everything I've deployed so far (internally and for clients). Though, who know's how much longer that will last.

So what about the distro that someone might have from BEFORE RedHat took over Centos? Are you now saying that they can go backwards and now say that its not legal to use? Sounds like there's more IF AND OR BUT than in a logic class. LOL

It wouldn't be the first time in history that an ex-post-facto-like assertion was declared, and succeeded due to the lack of a vigorous opposition. A bit like adverse possession in real estate, but without any direct statutory support.

Hate to tell you, but Ubuntu makes the same claims according to this post. We're moving toward our own OS in the event Red Hat prevails on the registered trademark for CentOS as well as the other GPL issues that have been identified. See our first cut at PIAF OS with the new PIAF-Green Virtual Machine featuring PBX in a Flash OS.
