We've moved our unit to the Big Bad Internet just to see how long it lasts. :hang:

Hi Ward,

Seems like just the thing I wanted to setup for my parents. Could you help with a couple of queries:

1) Does the device support VPN, I need to set it up in the middle east where VoIP is blocked.
2) Couldn't quite figure out from the description, besides the 2 FXS ports, is it still possible to register, say an OBiHai as an extension to allow FXO/FXS bridging?.
3) Can voice prompts be added?.

I've ordered mine and should get in the next 2 weeks or so, will report back once I've set it up.

Thanks.
Riz

RizSher:

1) No VPN support. Just SIP and IAX2.
2) Yes. You can register any type of SIP or IAX2 device.
3) No voice prompts yet although I'm told a means of adding them will be coming.

We've added several new sections to the original Nerd Vittles tutorial covering SIP URIs and the SPI firewall. Only bug we've found has to do with DTMF failing on incoming calls that are forwarded to another destination, e.g. call comes in on Google Voice and you want to send the call to a remote server that fully supports IVRs and voice prompts using a SIP URI to forward the call. DTMF will fail on the IVR connection. This was a recurring problem in Asterisk 1.4 that I had all but forgotten about. No amount of tinkering with dtmfmode settings and codecs will fix it so don't waste your time. I have reported it.

Version 3 of their Asterisk-GUI is now shipping on new appliances. Upgrade is also straight-forward. License keys have been eliminated in the new release. Default IP address has been changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.10.1 to avoid conflicts. Still the best bargain in town!

I've ordered one as well to play around with it. Are they going to go past asterisk 1.4?

I purchased 2 off ebay, from ebay sellter NetKing916, one about 8 days ago, and the other maybe 3 days ago. Today got an email saying the one ordered 8 days ago was shipped today, and contained a chinapost tracking number. The 2nd one is still outstanding. Came home to check the order status, and BOTH my ebay transaction have been replaced with the following message:
“We had to remove this listing from the site and you’re not required to complete the transaction. If you’ve already sent payment, the sale should process as normal and you don’t have anything to worry about. If you have any questions about delivery, please check tracking or contact your seller. If you run into any trouble along the way eBay is here to help. Please visit the Resolution Center to help resolve any problems you may encounter.”
The transaction number/date of order are all gone.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would they say if you've paid you will receive the item but then delete the transaction in your my eBay? If they deleted the transaction, you should have received a PayPal refund almost immediately. Did you get one? Looking at the language of the proported eBay email, it doesn't sound "ebayish". Sure it isn't spam or phishing?

Its not an email from eBay, it is what I see on my eBay page under the buying tab. It's a message from eBay, don't think it can be forged or spammed that easily.

Wild guess, someone complained about the seller/auction.

I had a very similar message a few years back when I purchased a prepaid cell refill. It was several days after the refill had already hit my account that ebay sent me the alert.

All of the previously available merchandise has disappeared from eBay. Only time I've seen something similar was when a seller violated the terms of service by trying to persuade someone to buy directly and avoid payment of eBay fees. Not saying that's the case here, but it is unusual. Haven't heard of anyone not getting the merchandise they paid for, however.

Direct link still works, but obviously no eBay guarantees.

Direct purchases are still through PayPal so you at least have that protection. Maybe like you said, they were cross selling and eBay inadvertently interpreted that as trying to avoid fees. I can see when you have an eBay storefront and separate web based storefront how that could easily happen. With the age of the technology in the unit, at this point, they are probably looking to close them out as quickly as possible and for the lowest cost of selling.

Either way PayPal gets their seller fees.

Don't really think this is a closeout. They're just getting started. Asterisk platform chosen was based on stability and memory footprint AFAIK.

I have one of these $30 refurbished plus $5 shipping units delivered two days ago and already encountered a couple of smallish issues, both cropping up when using client or client bridge mode. Firstly, after several hours of failing to get it to connect by Wifi to my router even with no security in place, I eventually discovered that removing the '-' from the SSID 'BTHomeHub-0212' was the vital step. It isn't a length issue; 'BTHomeHub00212' works just fine. Secondly, I haven't found a way to configure the unit with a static IP address in client or client bridge mode. I have reported these findings to x100p.

Can you do this at the router end? My router allows me to consistently assign the same localnet IP via DHCP to a device based on the MAC of the device...

Yes, my router can do that but I prefer that all 'static' IP addresses are outside the range of the router's DHCP pool.

You can still achieve that on the router... e.g your router sit at 192.168.1.1, change the DHCP range from 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1. 254. You can use the range betwen 168.1.2 to 168.1.49 to assign static IPs, and there would never be any conflict b/w statically assigned IPs and those handed out by the router's DHCP server.

Thanks but I already know all that. I'm not asking for a workaround. I've had dozens of pieces of kit through my hands and this is the first one that doesn't appear to offer the DHCP or static option in client or client bridge modes. It is there in AP mode.

My ISP has supplied millions of WiFi routers to its customers and every single one of them has a unique default SSID but they all begin 'BTHomeHub-'. I've never before encountered a client device that would not connect because of the presence of the '-'.
