hi all, i see that you recommend x32 vs x64 and recommend recommend PIAF-Purple (Asterisk 1.8 with FreePBX 2.10) or PIAF-Green (Asterisk 11 with FreePBX 2.11).

quesitons:

why isnt x64 widely used and supported? isnt that the model everyone is going to?

what is the difference between asterisk 1.8 and 11? Is it the first version of asterisk and more stable?

sorry for my ignorance just trying to ramp up.

Purple is way old at this point. From the Asterisk Wiki:
Release Series | Release Type | Release Date | Security Fix Only| EOL
1.8.X | LTS | 2010-10-21 | 2014-10-21 | 2015-10-21
11.x | LTS | 2012-10-25 | 2016-10-25 | 2017-10-25
Anything new should definitely be Green with FreePBX 2.11.
IIRC Ward's been recommending 64 bit lately. Could be wrong.
Asterisk 1.8 and 11 are both LTS releases, with 1.8 being the older of the two. Full details here.

I've had no issues running x64 versions of PIAF. You definitely want to go with Asterisk 11 and PIAF Green for a stable system. I upgraded my FreePBX to version 12 with no negative issues so far. Since Asterisk 12 and 13 are out, 11 is the most mature and 12 and 13 are based on some newer (and less widely tested) code.

sounds great, so it sounds like PIAF Green is the way to go. I want to go x64 but just seeing that its not the recommended path. I am going to have a large amount of phones, 275, on this install so want to make sure i setup everything properly.

I wouldn't use 12 only because it's not LTS. Actually, it's already Security Fix Only, with EOL 12-20-2015. Just use Green for anything production.

thanks rossiv, i will stay on green

btw, do you ever recommend virtulizing PIAF in a production environment? from everything i read asterisk is really sensitive and more issues can come up with virtualization.

I have two boxes virtualized right now. One is under Proxmox, one under ESXi. Zero issues on either. You used to see a lot of issues back in the older days of Asterisk with it needing a special time source, but I haven't noticed any issues at all.
