Starting to sound like the type of WiFi router matters. We've had no problems at all with dLink, Netgear, and Apple WiFi routers so long as there is a good signal.

if you would read it I posted same thing happened to me, just call the number they supply on eBay page and order with live staff and pay with your paypal and likely you might get better deal then bidding anyway.

-----------------

I got today my ten phones - set to English, hardware 1.0 firmware 0.2.50 and I don't seem to be able to get the WIFI going (LAN connects OK), the firmware is clearly bugged and it might be just luck to connect over WIFI

I am trying with WPA PSK and my AP uses 'WPA TKIP/AES' which I believe is compatible. When I scan WIFI APs I get told my WIFI is not enabled and it doesn't find any APs of course. Rebooting doesn't help, I tried to Enable LAN (which is the only way to disable WIFI) and then I re-Enable WIFI but still nothing.

Funny thing is if I go into Details I see there it found some MAC unknown to me and it shows some signal level -85db which is refreshed every ten seconds and fluctuates which means it is connected to something, however it can't scan for any WIFI network and on home display it has red cross where green bars of signal strength should be showing.

I did disable DHCP and put it on static but no luck either that way.

I guess the phone doesn't have browser configuration like Aastras have? It is pain to enter SSID and auth name and pass phrase from keypad unless you have some very simple and short one, I got ten phones and setting them all up will be chore.

The phone tries to download some software update but can't find server, I think it said something about configuration server... I take that to mean you can configure this phone from some *.cfg file on t*f*t*p like PIAF has?

The phone has place in setting where you can input 'server' address (Menu-Settings-System settings-Technical features-Download server address). It could perhaps be used to pull configuration to the phone from t*f*t*p or FTP on PIAF (t*f*t*p/FTP have Enable/Disable setting in the phone right in the 'Technical features' section). Anyone got to explore that?

-------------------------------

if it wasn't so funky setting up I might even order few more but as it is I will wait and see, I imagine this is the reason for these phones being sold off, don't see how you could sell this to the usual Nortel customer base, in fact they make themselves bad name selling these phones with bugged firmware and all support cut off except that you can download manuals, that plain sucks. Also as people reported, the power plug looses contact and the phone reboots if you attempt to move it around, you'd think nowadays things like these wouldn't happen. Also the buttons are not ideally placed on the phone face - the 4-way toggle should have been between those two display buttons (there is circle button inside that toggle which doesn't do anything but it feels like a switch when you press it.) But it does have nice sharp display and graphics for dialing and all that...

I wanted to pass on what I know of the background of these phones.

You did not buy these phones from an Avaya/Nortel authorized channel ... these as "new surplus" AKA "grey market" (not to mean this is a bad thing -- it's just how surplus stuff is dealt with); Avaya bought the Enterprise Division of Nortel... I believe the division that made phones was liquidated... And thus, that is why these phones are on the market. It's awesome that Five Star Telecom, the dealer on ebay, is offering a one-year warranty on the phone. I'm sure that's not backed by Avaya -- it's backed by them and their stock of phones. (BTW, LG made the phones.)

Nortel went belly up right in the middle of the life of these phones... that is why much of the docs have been ported to the Avaya site. If Avaya is making firmware changes, it's probably because enterprise customers have the phones and want them to work properly with enterprise switches, of which there are many in service. They gotta protect those lucrative service contracts!

Now, if their is someone out there who is an authorized Avaya endpoint reseller, please let us know if the 1535 is still on the pricelist -- and what Avaya is selling it for?

Even with the warts, it's an awesome deal for the price. If you follow at the thread here at PIAF, you see that most folks have made secure wifi work... but only with a lot of hassle. It seems the firmware is a little half-baked. However, IMHO, for the price and features it blows away the Grandstream, and is just slightly more expensive than a decent commercial video softphone.

Yes, once the phones are registered, they try and update firmware from the proxy server (via FTP no less)... I think some of the PIAF dev team are working on making this work using the Endpoint Manager.

Agreed, the power plug comes out easily! However, I see that on MANY high-end IP phones I work with -- the coaxial jack is a stupid design for a phone, unless you have a strain relief.

The US power cord supplied by Five Star could be used for my Arc Welder... they must have got a great deal on cords! :)

I finally got wifi to work on my network. My current configuration does not have encryption enabled. The only thing I did different was added my Voip provider IP address to the proxy server setting, enabled stun, and set the stun server IP address to the same IP as the proxy server IP address... now if I can only get an encrypted Wifi connection working.. whew..

Video worked with X-Lite...

My 1535 arrived and after reading thru the first few pages of this thread, I was able to get it connected and registered in no time.

I was curious if X-Lite video worked and sure enough...

Honestly, I did not expect that. BTW, this is on a local Asterisk box via WiFi.

Interesting find on the LG website. By the way, did anyone else notice the RJ11 jack on the back with the little rubber stopper on it? Does this baby have the ability to hook a DECT phone up and do wireless handset calls?

Thx w1ve, I agree its a deal as it is, didn't know Nortel is out of business, I don't watch the business scene really. Lets hope that some smart folks will do something about the firmware.

I have no problem with LAN, only with WIFI, played with it an hour yesterday and another hour tonight. I am in room with WRT54GL WAPoint that is flashed with Tomato firmware and uses WPA-TKIP/AES. However I suppose it doesn't matter what WAP I use since the phone can't get that far so as to see any available WIFI networks.

It always ends the search with 'WIFI profile not enabled' which of course is enabled and it says so when I go and try enabling it again.
I tried entering the authentication password also for WPA2 and then selecting to Use WPA-PSK

as per advice - from DSLR forum >
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You also need to pick WPA2 in the "Type" menu option as well as enter a password in the WPA2 menu option, before trying to select your network.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also went into Encryption section and chose 'No encryption' just so that I make 'positive settings' of everything, then I back out and try WIFI searching but it says WIFI not enabled, I back out a press Apply, after reboot of WIFI interface I am back where I was. Done all that many times over, only good thing about it is that your entered data stays put, if I had to enter all details everytime I switched profile to LAN and back to WIFI I'd have given up long time ago.
As it is only the WIFI connecting to AccessPoint is the problem, everything else works.

-------------------

I wonder if the 'WIFI is not enabled' message doesn't point to some hardware fault in the WIFI module. It is hard to see that a company would release firmware and have such basic flaw in it. Did someone already try to split the phone open? Looks like those rubber feet may have to be ripped off to get to screws or could it be just shell snap together thing?

For the power connector I might rig something to fix the cord from moving behind the plug, maybe in that place btw LAN and RJ11 connectors is a space where one could drive screw into that plastic with small plastic eyelet that would hold the wire fixed. Or perhaps once I figure how to open the case I might even hardwire the phones from the inside.

And yeah, the power cord is awsome, I wish now I had asked for European plug since I am taking these to EU and who knows they have flood of those cables which nobody wants here... now I will have to chop off the receptacle end and mount EU plug

------------------

I had no problem having video call with 3CX free softphone client that Ward is touting as the one he likes best (for dealing with NAT and being robust overall) and it looks smart too.
BTW 3CX PBX which runs on window platform as a program was the PBX I was playing with before landing here in those days when we had TRIXBOX 123 :)
Then I had big problem getting remote extensions registering, now I only fight with two way voice on SIP phones (but these Nortel phones work including voice both ways.

Hi,
I wonder if anybody managed to successfully update the firmware... I read the documentation but I am not sure that all files mentioned in the document are actually part of the firmware archive that is available on Nortel support website.
I have two units: one works with wifi if I go completely manually (wep only, no dhcp, no ssid scan, no wpa) but the other one will not do wifi at all (scan does not work and it cannot connect to any AP with or without security/encryption).
I think maybe re-imaging them I'll have more chances to get them fixed.
Thanks for any suggestion!

Now that you mention LG..this does look familiar
http://www.lg-ers.com/lvp2800.html

I wonder if we can get LGs firmware and run it.

It appears that there was a collaboration between LG and Nortel. Some websites describe the phone line as LG-Nortel . That sounds promising. On another note, I couldn't find any info on the RJ11 connector in the back of the phone when I went through the manuals. The LG version infers that you can connect to the PSTN but not specifically through that port.

Here's the LG-Nortel video phone line brochure for the 1535 which is called the LVP-2800

I've ordered four of these phones. I may sacrifice one and pull it apart to see what's inside.

You guys have gotten my curiosity up! ;)

HA! Great idea! I would further "enhance" that with a tie wrap :smile5:

Just got mine today, it was loaded with 0.2.50 firmware and defaulted to english language.

Wishing I would have ordered more of these, I would love to send my Dad and Father-in-law one (they both live pretty far from us so we don't get to see them a whole lot)

I may take the plunge and order a few more once I see how this works out... can't wait to peer with my Asterisk box this evening :)

Any idea on how to place a pause in there for dialing? I have to dial conf bridges and they dont seem to like the speed of the tones being entered. On X-Lite I was able to place delays around the codes so the conf bridge would understand them.

Or any way to slow down the tones ala long touch tones?

Thanks!

I had a bit of a mess getting my WPA-PSK wifi working but It's going now on the 3 phones that I purchased. If I remember correctly I had to
  1. enable the wifi profile to access the settings
  2. then I had to enter in the SSID
  3. make sure WEP encryption was off
  4. enter the WPA-PSK authentication
  5. enable WPA-PSK
  6. apply all the settings
  7. put it back into LAN mode
  8. while I was at it I got Network Time syncing and put in my SIP registration, made sure that was all working
  9. switched it back to Wifi and then it just worked.
anybody know how to change the SIP password screen so I can enter letters instead of just numbers?

EDIT: looks like that's on the front page: "The other two keys of importance are * and #. * is used to enter special characters such as the period, slash, etc. # is used to change the keyboard type: ABC, Abc, 123, etc."

Thanks for trying to help us unfortunates who can't make WIFI going, always good to hear good story ending even if it doesn't help but at least it gives some hope.
I might try tonight reseting the phone and going through the setting up rigmarole again (I got 14 letter SSID and WPA authentication pass is 29 char long and its a lengthy procedure to enter it all)

i got these phones also. thanks to Ward and others for alerting us to the deal.

i have Verizon Actiontec router that they install with FIOS. and I have WPA2 setup on the router.
tried everything discussed in the forums till now - no luck...
the top left symbol suggests that Wifi is conencted, but VOIP registration failed.
while switching profile to wifi, it says no ip address from DHCP, so the problem lies in DHCP address acquiring it seems.

try turning off DHCP and manually assigning the ip address, gateway, dns, etc. . .
